At the beginning of August Gerard Culbertson, depot principal at Linkline Express Services (D29) and his son Liam embarked upon a week-long cycle challenge alongside the Birmingham Irish Cycle Appeal (BICA) in aid of a number of worthy causes. The duo endured a 533mile cycle ride, spanning over six and a half days across the Wild Atlantic Way. The ride began at the most Southern point of Ireland, Mizen Head, ending at the most Northern point, Malin Head. Together with BICA, Gerard and Liam took on the challenge to raise money for several charities across the UK; with Cystic Fibrosis, PSPA Parkinsons, SPOCC, young carers, the Allen’s Croft Project, Dementia Care and Sudden Arrhythmic Death Syndrome (SAD) all set to benefit from the funds raised. BICA has been organising demanding cycling challenges in honour of charities for over two decades, and is set to raise over £70K this year alone. Gerard commented: “The ride was one of the greatest experiences of my life to date. It posed some pretty serious challenges along the way, but the sense of achievement and the good times made it well worth it. The scenery was amazing from beginning to end and the laughs even better. Without a doubt we will both be doing the ride again wherever it is set to be next.” Liam added: “I’ve never done anything like this before, and I have to admit I was slightly nervous when we set off but eager to tackle the challenge as well as I could. The two middle days were long and difficult, and tested the willpower of everybody; but I thoroughly enjoyed every second of it and will certainly be doing the ride again.” The pair completed the ride without getting off their bikes whilst on-route, even when faced with the steepest of hills in Ireland, Mamore Gap. Kevin Buchanan, managing director at Pall-Ex commented: “Gerard and Liam did a fantastic job undertaking such a gruelling task, and the fact that so many varying and worthy charities will benefit from their efforts only makes their achievement more impressive.” So far, Gerard and Liam have raised over £3000; but they’re still looking to raise more money to hit a target of £3500. This December, the team at Linkline Express Services Ltd decided to support a local charity in Birmingham. As we were all making our festive plans and looking forward to the Christmas period, we knew there were a few that had a less fortunate time ahead. Sifa Fireside is a Birmingham based homelessness charity, with the year round aim to care for those living on the street. It provides cleaning facilities, clothing, food and somewhere to sleep. Sifa Fireside rely solely on donation. Whether that be money or practical items. With this in mind – the team at Linkline decided to start a collection of practical and much needed items, such as; warm clothing, food and toiletries. Over the course of December, a considerable amount of donations are being collected for Sifa Fireside, ready for donation in support of the good work that they do. We hope our token gesture can help in any way. Look out for an update on our ‘20 Days of Giving’ campaign on our social media pages.

The sky is the limit, or at least it was for Gerard & Rita Culbertson this week. Our high flying Directors took to the sky in a 15-20 minute helicopter journey over Warwickshire, arranged by all the staff at Linkline as a joint birthday gift. They took in the stunning views of the county, as well as the infamous Warwickshire castle. The helicopter itself has an intriguing history too. Owned and recently refurbished by Sarah Duchess of York, the helicopter was her inspiration behind the children’s animation and television series she created in the 90’s ‘Budgie the Helicopter’ Gerard and Rita thoroughly enjoyed the experience and had this to say “our helicopter ride was a fantastic and exhilarating experience, especially as we learned we were sitting in the original ‘Budgie’. Thank you so much to all the Linkline team for organising a thoughtful and fun gift for our birthday”

It’s not often you walk into work and see an original and somewhat tired looking 1966 double decker bus sitting in your warehouse. But that’s exactly what Linkline’s Managing Director – Gerard Culbertson has been doing over the summer holiday. Regents Park Community Primary School commissioned local builder Brendan Breslin of BB Construction (Midlands) Ltd to bring the original 1966 double decker bus back to life, in order to create a learning centre for their pupils and local community. Using an area of Linkline’s newly acquired 35,000 sq ft warehouse as a workshop, Brendan quickly set to work. For everybody at Linkline, seeing the gradual transformation of the bus over the school’s summer holiday was a real privilege. Impressed with the project and the cause it represented, Gerard was keen to help it along, as he was aware that funding was tight. On behalf of Linkline Express Services, Gerard handed over a donation of £250 as well as contributing to the lounge area with beanbags and pillows – aptly creating the ‘Linkline Lounge’ for the children and staff to enjoy and learn in comfort. The School has ambitious plans for the future of the bus, including a school radio station aimed at inspiring children in the arts. Gerard hopes that Linkline can be a part of future developments and encourage further fundraising for this inspiring and exciting project.
